Peter C deBruin recently won the 2004 HIA West Australian Awards for "The Most Innovative Use Of Steel" & 2004 HIA South West WA Awards for "The Most Innovative Use Of Steel" & a Finalist in the prestgious 2005 HIA Australian Awards for "The Most Innovative Use Of Steel" The following description is taken from the official award entry.

"The steel roof beams are rolled to produce the curved outline of the structure. Colorbond Customorb sheets are fixed horizontally to the wall frames and to the roof purlins located between the steel rolled beams. Inside the main living area Colorbond Coreline sheeting has been used to produce a curved ceiling. The combined use of the steel portal frame(ie columns connected to the rolled roof beams) with steel framing fixed between the columns has produced a solid structure that can withstand cyclonic windloadings. "

"The Customorb sheets are fixed to follow the curved roof profile with no gaps in the lapping of the sheets. The corner and window framing flashings and mouldings are fixed with great precision and accuracy. Colorbond ventilation grills are fitted to perform a cooling function and are nestled into the custorb sheets. The front outriggers are carefully trimmed and allow the roof sheets to extend past the front and rear walls of the house. The Coreline ceiling sheets, although up to 6m in length, are fitted carefully so as to hide the screw lines and prevent lapping gaps."

"The curved roof has no gutter attached, therefore preventing accumulation of leaves and resulting in no possible fire or water damage. The runoff  is a waterfall effect during rainfall. The colorbond sheets blend well with the natural environment and with other building products such as cedar wood and limestone. The curved roof profile is so effective in blending with the tree filled environment that its subtle yet striking appearance provides an interesting addition to the Australian architectural and  environmental landscape."
